Helioresearch Corporation - The Corona - An Introduction

The white light corona is light from the photosphere scattered by the electrons in the corona. But the corona produces its own light. Surprisingly, even though it is farther from the core of the Sun, the corona is much hotter than the cromosphere and the photosphere. In fact, with temperatures up to a million degrees Celsius, coronal gases produce lots of X-rays and ultraviolet radiation.
